Audrey Flack (b. 1931) is an American photorealist painter, printmaker, and sculptor. Flack is a pioneer of Photorealism, with work exhibited in the collections of major museums around the world, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum of Modern Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, and Whitney Museum of American Art. She was the first photorealist painter to have work purchased by the Museum of Modern Art in 1966.

'I prefer to think of fortune as wealth rather than circumstance as I do not believe in blessings resulting from unpredictable phenomenons. I believe I pave the path I travel upon. If wealth is measured by the health of our earth, then we are very poor people. If wealth is measured by the digits of my worth in money, then I am a poor person. Fortune does not guide our hand, but only comes with conservation. Being Chinese, it's in my birth and blood to associate fortune with riches than chance. Even this fortune teller gypsy woman believes in the praticality of saving.'

"For some Chinese, one of the most popular symbols for good fortune is the smiling buddha. If you want to prosper, you should rub the big belly of a smiling Buddha statue. In contrast, a common image of poverty and misfortune is of a starving child with a distended belly. Two large bellies: one a symbol of plenty and the other of lack. One holds up a gold ingot to bless those hungry for more wealth, and the other holding up an empty bowl hungry for sustenance. The child's bowl is adorned with an inverted '福', not only because an inverted word could signify it's opposite, but because, ironically, it is a pun for 'fortune is here'."

'I was inspired by traditional English Folklore and superstitions to create my illustration. The words come from an old English rhyme that is used to predict a person's fortune, based on how many magpies they see at one time. The bird's feather and the distinct black and white colouring are then used to visualize the contrast between bad and good luck.'

He is feeling particularly generous tonight, after winning all bets in poker when the odds were against him 5:2. As he pulls out of the casino, he feels the urge to have a quick glimpse at his winnings. He drops the wallet, which falls into a gap behind the driver seat. He reaches down to feel for his winnings. Unsuccessful, he decides to look down to see where the wallet has fallen. All of a sudden… a loud screech is followed by a CRASH! and the car spins out of control. Upon regaining a sense of orientation, the man looks up to see where he has landed...
